After they had filled up on pizza, soda, and good conversation, Lincoln and Tai crawled into bed together. Tai rolled over on his side, facing the wall, and Lincoln nestled in behind him, resting his chin on Tai’s bulky shoulder and wrapping his arms around Tai’s torso.

The alarm clock woke them at four in the morning, and Lincoln leapt out of bed after pressing the snooze button.

He tiptoed through the room, flicking on the overhead light and digging through his suitcase. “Tai? You’ve got ten minutes before the alarm goes off again. We have to get moving because the golden hour isn’t all day. It’s, you know, an hour long.”

Tai groaned, covering his head with the blankets and burrowing into them.

Lincoln whipped around the room, packing his camera bag and a second bag of extra supplies. He tugged a shirt over his head and slipped on a pair of joggers as the alarm clock blared again. “Time to get up, sleepyhead.”

Tai threw the sheets back and rolled over, exposing his bare chest. He cracked his eyes open and sighed. “Come back to bed.”

“Not a chance. I know what you want.” Lincoln kissed the corner of Tai’s lips. “You promised you would do this with me, so get dressed. I want to see the sun rise.”

Tai bunched the sheets between his legs. “Second.”

“I already saw your morning wood, if it’s what you’re trying to hide.”

Tai grunted.

“You’re adorable in the morning. C’mon, seriously. We’ll be late if you keep dragging your feet, and this is important to me.”

“I’m getting up,” Tai muttered, stretching his arms over his head and arching his back. He yawned and eased out of bed, escaping to the bathroom as Lincoln returned to his preparations. He cracked the bathroom door as the toilet flushed, splashing water on his hands and face. “This for one of your openings?”

“Maybe eventually. Right now, it’s just for fun.”

“I’ll take some.”

“Take some what?” Lincoln laced his shoes.

“I’ll take some photos of you in the town.”

“Have you ever taken photographs before?” Lincoln handed him the second bag and the tripod, shouldering the camera himself.

“I can carry it.” Tai reached for the camera.

“Mmm. Nope. Have you ever taken photographs before?”

“Not with a good camera. Sometimes I used to take photos with a disposable one.”

“Oh, I have an old analog camera, too, but this one is digital. I have to be in the mood for dark room development. You know what we should do? We should get cheap disposable cameras and take pictures.”

Tai grabbed the keys. “Thought we had to go?”

“Right, right.” Lincoln buzzed around the motel room, grabbing his wallet and cell phone, and followed Tai. He settled in the passenger seat, clicking his seatbelt across his chest.

“How do we get to this place?”

“According to my map, we go fifteen miles up the highway, and we’ll see a dirt road to turn off at.”

“All right.” Tai got on the highway. “Most ghost towns are tourist attractions.”

“Yeah, I guess this one would be, except it’s not in the greatest condition, and people don’t know much about it.
